Curriculum Vitae

Santiago Pereira Campos is a Lawyer specialized in Procedural Law. He works as a practitioner and researcher since 1988 in the area of Modernization and Modification of Iberoamerican Judicial Systems.

 

He was appointed Board Member of the Center of Judicial Studies of the Americas ("CEJA") by the General Assembly of the Organization of American States ("OAS") in 2012.

 

He is a Professor of Procedural Law and Oral Litigation in the School of Law of the Universidad de Montevideo. He also coordinates the Postgraduate course of Applied Procedural Law in the said University. Additionally, he is a Professor of the Uruguayan Centre for Judicial Studies of the Judicial Branch (which is the School for candidates to be Judges).

 

Pereira Campos is founding member of the professional firm RUEDA ABADI PEREIRA leading the Litigation and Arbitration practice since 1992. He has been highly ranked by prestigious international ranking firms such as Chambers & Partners, Legal 500 or Global Law Expert.

 

He is the vice-president of the Ibero-American Institute of Procedural Law. Member of the International Association of Procedural Law, of the Uruguayan Association of Procedural Law ("Eduardo J. Couture"), the International Bar Association (being also a member of the Litigation and Law Firm Management Committees of the said Association).

 

He was retained to perform international consulting services in the areas of Judicial Systems and Procedural Law by the Center of Judicial Studies for the Americas, United Nations Development Program, Inter-American Development Bank, Multilateral Investment Fund, United Nations Industrial Development Program and by the Work Bank Institute.

 

He has also been hired to design reforms to judicial systems and to assist in the drafting of laws and regulations by Governments as well as by private and public entities.

 

He is frequently consulted as an independent expert in Procedural Law and Litigation in relevant cases litigated in Uruguay.

 

He is the author or co-author of twenty books and over two hundred papers and articles published in Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Spain, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panamá, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Among his works it is worth highlighting: "Modernización de la Justicia Civil" (Co-author and coordinator), "Código General del Proceso-Comentado, Anotado y Concordado", 6 Volumes (Co-author), "Estudios multidisciplinarios sobre Derecho Médico y Organizaciones de la Salud" (Director and co-author), "Cinco años de jurisprudencia sobre Relaciones de Consumo-Ley Nº 17.250" (Co-author), "El proceso civil ordinario por audiencias-La experiencia uruguaya en la reforma procesal civil-Modelo teórico y relevamiento empírico" (Author), "Estudios sobre Defensa de la Competencia y Relaciones de Consumo" (Director and co-author), "El Nuevo Proceso Laboral-Ley 18.572: Enfoque interdisciplinario" (Co-author).

 

Pereira Campos has participated as speaker, moderator and panelist in over a hundred conferences and seminars, both in Uruguay and abroad, and has been a visiting professor in American and European Universities (such as the American University for the United States, Universidad Católica and Universidad Diego Portales de Chile or the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid).

 

He is a member of the Expert Group for the Civil Proceedings Reform of the Centre for Judicial Studies of the Americas and he is also an active researcher of the National System of Researchers of the National Investigation and Innovation Agency of Uruguay.
